English as a Second Language—Volunteer Tutors and ESL Teachers

Make a difference in your community and help make a positive change for adults learning English.Literacy for All of Monterey Park (LAMP) at the Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library provides free ESL classes and 1-1 tutoring for adult English language learners. These classes and tutoring groups help adults navigate their community, communicate with others and feel more confident in their daily lives.All volunteers receive materials and training, continued support from the adult literacy coordinator, attend quarterly Tutor Meetups, and meet 1-2 times per week with their class or learner. A teaching credential is not required.Students interested in gaining teaching experience and classroom management are also encouraged to apply. The curriculum is flexible, and LAMP provides the materials.This program is funded by the California Library Literacy Services Grant (CLLS) and the Workforce and Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA).
About Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library
The Monterey Park Bruggemeyer Library was one of the first libraries in California to offer literacy services as part of the California Literacy Campaign (CLC), sponsored by the California State Library. Since 1984, LAMP (Literacy for All of Monterey Park) has been committed to helping adult learners in the community improve their skills so that they can reach their goals and fulfill their dreams. LAMP has helped many adults improve their skills and reach their goals:to get a job or better jobto advocate for their childrento pursue higher educationto become more active in the communityto feel more confident in their daily lives
