Volunteer/Guardian ad Litem

A Guardian ad Litem is a community member appointed by the court to conduct an independent objective investigation of cases of alleged child abuse and neglect. Before beginning service, GALs participate in 35 hours of training and observe 2 hours of juvenile court.
The duties of the GAL include collecting and reviewing confidential social and health information, interviewing children and families in their homes or placements, and preparing a written report with recommendations for juvenile court judges about what is in each child’s best interest. An attorney advocate accompanies the GAL to court. Guardian ad Litem volunteer advocates are supervised and supported in their work by GAL program staff.

GAL Child Advocates, Attorney Advocates, and GAL Staff that promote the best interests of children alleged to have been abused or neglected. GAL Child Advocate responsibilities include investigating the circumstances and resources surrounding the child to meet the child’s needs.
