Every year, hundreds of thousands of low-to-moderate income New Yorkers rely on NYC Free Tax Prep to file their taxes safely, accurately, and at no cost. By volunteering, you’ll help your NYC neighbors across all five boroughs save an average of $346 in tax preparation fees and access valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit (CTC). Since launching in 2015, IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Tax Preparers have completed over 1 million tax returns and helped New Yorkers save over $200 million in estimated tax preparer fees.Make a Difference. As an IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Tax Preparer, you’ll provide free, trusted tax preparation for fellow New Yorkers while building valuable professional skills in customer service, financial literacy, and tax preparation. Whether you’re a student, a retiree, a professional, or simply someone who wants to give back—your time will directly strengthen the financial security of families and individuals across our city.Responsibilities:Help New Yorkers file their taxes during tax season (late January 2026 to late April 2026)Use tax preparation software to prepare accurate returnsConnect clients to additional financial health resourcesMaintain strict confidentiality and safeguard client informationQualifications:Effective communication and customer service skillsBasic computer literacyWillingness to complete free IRS training before tax seasonBilingual volunteers are especially needed (Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, and others)Training:No previous tax experience is needed! You will receive hands-on training and ongoing support to prepare simple tax returns.
